"Often she felt as though she had been picked up and turned about like a kaleidoscope, that all her complacent assumptions had been shaken up and reassembled in a different order." (Judith Lennox)

Say the Magic Word

How to play the game

1) Create your own character.

You create a character with a background based on either the world of Labyrinth or any character from a song by David Bowie. You will need something to talk about so if you make your own character you will have it all in your head and not have to learn anything. It can be as much or as little as you want. Just make sure you are in a position to talk about yourself or other stuff to other players.

2) Collect your trinket bag at the door

When you enter the ballroom you will be given a bag containing ;
A Badge (of either a baby or an owl) Three trinkets (of a timepiece or of a crystal ball) A piece of paper on which is written your magic word. If you receive an Owl and a crystal ball you are on Jareth's team If you receive a Baby and a timepiece you are on Sarah's team.

3) Talk to people on the other team

Put on your badge and put your trinkets and word back in your trinket bag. Dance, flirt, romance, argue, but most of all talk to people wearing the other team badge. While you talk try to trick them into saying your magic word. If you can make them say the magic word, show them that it is your word and take their trinket. At the end of the game the team possessing the higher number of the opposite team's trinkets will win. If Jareth's team wins Sarah will have to stay at the ball and will lose her brother.

If Sarahs team wins she will be free to continue to the Goblin Castle.

4) Changing your word.

When you think too many people know what your magic word is you can exchange one of your trinkets (either your own or one you have won) for a new word from a GM.

5) Goblins!

Around the ballroom Goblins are hiding. If you find a Goblin you can take it to GM to exchange it for a Trinket (of your own team).

6) In the event of a tie at the end of the game there will be a duel.

Teams each pick one person from the opposite team. These two must battle it out and the first to get their opponent to say their magic word will win the game for the team.

We plan to set up a facebook page so that players can get to know each other’s characters and get into the swing before the game.

I think I am the oldest attendee - I certainly feel like it

Having writed a game by accident and then had to alter it into another game I thought I should probably write a proper one.

I have written for the stage a lot and dabbled in story writing and done lots of GM writing for TT and some for LARPs. I have only one objective with games and that is to have as much fun as possible - with a bit of angst thrown in for balance.

I live on the Time/space rift so life is always a case of jumping from ledge to flagpole whilst dodging the flying mutants and solving a 3D puzzle whilst stopping for the occasional Tequila.
